It’s been an exciting couple of weeks Chez Book Whisperer! My NBF has been a busy boy again recently and brought me all sorts of goodies. For anyone with a nervous disposition please look away now.

From publishers / authors

Aren’t they beautiful? It’s amazing how long I can stare lovingly at a pile of books for, really it is. The following have been sent to me as review copies by publishers or authors (thank you all very much) and  also won two of them in a twitter competition.

 So what did I get?

The Snowman by Jo Nesbo (currently reading and LOVING it)

Blueeyedboy by Joanne Harris

A Taste of Sorrow by Jude Morgan

Arcadia Falls by Carol Goodman

The Fallen by Mark Terry

My Name is Memory by Ann Brashares

Timecatcher by Marie-Lousie Fitzpatrick

Burley Cross Postbox Theft by Nicola Barker

Jane’s Fame by Claire Harman

The Lost Sex Scenes of Jane Austen by Arielle Eckastut

Wild Romance: The True Story of a Victorian Scandal by Chloe Schama

Pearl of China by Anchee Min

Picked up at a church sale for £1.00 for the whole bag

Yes, that’s right, you read that correctly! The church hall down the road has a used book sale (some of which look like they haven’t even been read!) and this week they had a sign saying “Fill up a carrier bag with books for £1.00″. Erm, OK then!

The Boleyn Inheritance by Phillippa Gregory (brand new hardback)

The Other Half Lives by Sophie Hannah (brand new hardback and signed!)

A Woman’s Life by Guy de Maupassant

Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad

I Claudius by Robert Graves

Hovel in the Hills by Elizabeth West

Stories for Summer by various (inc. F. Scott Fitzgerald, Henry James, D H Lawrence, Katherine Mansfield, Oscar Wilde etc)

Second Fiddle by Mary Wesley

Portrait of the Artist by James Joyce

Death in the Stocks by Georgette Heyer

They Were Defeated by Rose Macauley

A Woman of Cairo by Noel Barber

Books I have bought or swapped online

You know, a girl’s gotta treat herself!

Esther Waters by George Moore (love my Victorian classics)

The Captive of Kensington Palace by Jean Plaidy (want to know more about the lady on the throne)

The Laughing Policeman by Maj Sjowall and Per Waloo

Jane Eyre’s Daughter by Elizabeth Newman

Brooklyn by Colm Toibin

An Utterly Impartial History of Britain by John O’Farrell

The Seamstress by Frances de Pontes Peebles (given to me as a gift by the lovely Tisha who stayed with me last week on her travels round Europe)

Has anyone read any of these yet? Anything interesting in these piles that you would like me to review soon?

i have to admit that i have never read ANY of them. i’ll be keeping an eye out for the reviews. a few titles have perked my interest. :)

    • It is isn’t it? I’m so happy :)

  3. I know! I did think of you when I was snapping up those books in the church hall. I couldn’t believe they let me get all those for a quid!

    • winstonsdad Says:

      better than mine

  4. Shannon Says:

Ooh, a new Jude Morgan book! Loved Indiscretion!

I’m curious about The Laughing Policeman – what a great title! Wow, don’t you love church sales? Those books are in such good condition – and for only a pound!! So would have gone crazy there! And you’ve got a Mary Wesley and a Heyer and all sorts of goodies! *sigh* Why don’t I live in England?

    • I haven’t read any others by Jude Morga yet, Shannon. The publisher contacted me to see if I would like to read this as I am doing the Bronte challenge. Of course I was so excited as I LOVE the Brontes!! I have looked at reviews and they are all really positive. I plan on reading this one in the next few weeks so I’ll let you know how I get on.

I know, there were some great books there. The woman actually said to me that the ones in the £1.00 for a bag selection were the ones that nobody wanted but there are some really great titles!

  5. Sunny Sweet Pea Says:

Wow! Jealous! How do you find the time to read all if these?

    • Good question, Jenny! the answer is – I don’t! Not all of them, anyway. I like to think that one day I will read all the books on my TBR pile but in order to do that I would need to live to be about 600 years old! :)

  6. Virginie M Says:

Waouw !!! What a nice, lovely mouthwatering addition to your TBR indeed ;-D !!!!!! I understand your excitement ……the church sale was a real bargain !!!
Boof “A Woman’s life” is a beautiful novel , I love this book,I studied it in high school, I read it several times afterwards…I am glad you picked this one up, I hope you will enjoy it.I love Maupassant , he is a(very gifted )classics writer from Normandy !
I have the Captive of Kensington Palace in my TBR as well….”.Jane Eyre’s Daughter “appeals to me , I’ ll check this one out on GR.
Enjoy your reads Boof, we will enjoy the reviews !

    • I’m really looking forward to the Maupassant, Virginie. I have read Boule de Suife and some of his other short stories (I read them in high school too – in french, although I certainly wouldn’t be able to do that now). I hope to get to this one pretty soon. I didn’t know he was from Normandy, though! :)

  7. Lee Says:

    Hey Boof,

Your blog looks lovely. I read and loved The Seamstress last year. I share in your joy with all the great books you scored!

    • Thanks, Lee :) I added The Seamstress to my TBR pile after yours and Chrissie’s review (Tisha picked it out from my TBR pile) so I am really looking forward to reading it.

  8. Lori (TNBBC) Says:

    Holy Mother of Books Boof!!!
Why arent you crumbling under the anxiety of all seeing all those unread books piling up? You are a mighter woman than I am!!!!

    • I know Lori! It’s a good job I enjoy admiring them as much as reading them!

  9. I love picking up tons of books for free, basically free, or even great deals of money. And props to you for not completely skipping out on life and walling yourself up in your room to read them all which would be my inclination.
    Your blog/title is awesome.

    • Thanks so much :)

I do wall myself up regularly with books – it’s my favourite thing to do!

  10. Dot Says:

Wow you have had a good book haul, especially all of those books for a £1- bargain! Hope that you enjoy them!

    • Thanks Dot! The difficult part is chosing what I want to read first out of all these beauties!

  11. Tisha Says:

    Jealous.

    That’s all. Just jealous.

Oh, and let me know whenever you get to I, Claudius. I’ve been meaning to read that for some time now.

    • Oh cool, maybe we should do a read-along in a few months?

      • novelinsights Says:

I wouldn’t mind joining that as I’ve had it on my TBR forever!

      • That sounds like a plan!

  12. novelinsights Says:

I can’t believe you got a signed Sophie Hannah in a bargan bag of books. What a wonderful stash!!

    • I know, I couldn’t believe it either. It looks brand new and never read, too.
