Today I’m two!

It is exactly two years ago today that made my first foray into the world of book blogging and what a journey it’s been since then. I have have fallen in and out of love with my blog at various points but I love being able to look back and see the record I have made of books I have read, conversations I have had and probably the best thing about it is the friends I have made through doing this – some whom I have been lucky enough to meet in real life and others whom I have loved getting to know via our love of books.

Here are a few stats since my time as The Book Whisperer:

A total of 218,000 hits

Most viewed post of all time is The best 11 BooK Club Reads of all time EVER! followed by my interview with the lovely Kathryn Stocket (author of The Help)

The five most looked at book reviews are: The Snowman by Jo Nesbo, Before I Go To Sleep by S J Watson, Mornings in Jenin by Susan Abulhawa, Mini Shopaholic by Sophie Kinsella and The Legacy by Katherine Webb.

I like looking at the search terms that bring people to my blog too as some of them make me laugh. They are ususally terms along the lines of best book club books etc but I have to wonder how peoole searching for Bali sexy girls and scary forrests ended up on my blog!

  A big thank you

Of course, although I love the fact that this blog is keeping a record of my reading that I can look back on in years to come, I still absoloutely love the fact that you all take the time to stop by and read or comment – it really does make my day when people take the time to comment :)

So, as a big thank you for your continuted support I am doing a little giveaway to celebrate my two years running The Book Whisperer:

All you have to do it click on the “reviews” tab on the blue bar at the top of the page, pick any book that I have reviewed here on this blog (there are about 180 to chose from) and post a comment to say which book you would like to win and why. I will then pick a name using random.org and the winner will receive a brand new shiny edition of that book from The Book Depository or Amazon. This competition is internation and you have until midnight (UK time) on Tuesday 13th December to enter and the winner will be informed on here and also by email the next day.

Good luck!

  A decision

Now a confession: Last week I considered giving up my blog. Yep, I did that thing that I think most bloggers do at some point or other – I decided it was too much and that I was going to put The Book Whisperer to bed. Then, a day or so later I got a lovely messgae from someone saying that she had been recommended my blog by a librarian as a great place to look for books to read in book groups and how she loved my blog. I immediately remembered why I love doing this so much again. I think maybe I have been so busy lately with a hugely demanding day job (that rarely turns out to be 9-5pm due to my work load) and when I have some free time sometimes I just want to curl up with my book (or even watch TV!) rather than sit and think carefully about what I want to write in a review. I am currently about 6 books behind in my reviews and that had been stressing me out too. When I got that message it reminded me of all the lovely comments and emails I have had in the past about my blog (and I particularly love it when I review a great book and people post that my review has made them want to read it too!). So….after much deliberation, I have decided to carry on…..

Here’s to the next year! :)

After another fantastic literary blog hop hosted by Judith at Leeswammes’ Blog, where over 50 book blogs took part, I now have a winner as picked by random.org. So out of a total of 128 entrants, the winner is…

Quinxoticweetzie

Congratulations! I will send you an email shortly and then there will be a lovely copy of Her Fearful Symmerty on its way to you.

Thanks to everyone who joined in.

And the winner is…. October 12, 2011

Thank you to all who dropped by to wish me a Happy Birthday after my mammoth (and trust me, it felt like it) 40 day challenge. There were days when I wondered why I’d commited myself to posting every day but I got so many lovely comments and someone even said it was like opening a new door on an advent calendar every day which really made me smile :)

Anyway, on the final day of my challenege I offered the chance for one person to win their choice of any of the books that I had read and posted about in the previous 40 days (and there were lots to chose from). So, after using random.org I now have a winner….

(drum roll please)

Sabrina

Sabrina blogs at Thinking About Loud and she has chosen Gentlemen and Players by Joanne Harris. It’s a fantastic book, and I hope you enjoy it Sabrina :)

Day 40 – Win one of my favourite books! October 9, 2011

♫ ♪Happy Birthday to Me, Happy Birthday to Meeeeeeeee ♪ ♫…..

Well, this is it! I am now officially old! The BIG FOUR-OH has come knocking at my door and I have shuffled over to let it in. Only kidding! (not about being 40, but about the shuffling bit). Age is a state of mind and I still feel 17 (and still act it sometimes too ;) )

My orginal challenge for today was to pick a favourite book about a celebration but I have changed my mind and I’m feeling very generous today so instead I am going to give away one of the books that I have mentioned in this series of post.

The Rules

All you have to do is leave a comment below saying which book you would like to receive and why and I will enter you into the draw. I will pick the winner using random.org on Wednesday 12th October at 6pm GMT so you have 3 days to enter. Here is a link to all my 40 posts so happy deciding.

Good luck!

I’m on Facebook! September 21, 2011

Earlier this year, I finally dragged myself into the 21st century (after much nagging from family and friends about my absense) and joined Facebook.

Now I’ve gone one step further and have set up a page for The Book Whisperer (I know – get me!)

So, please stop by and “like” my page and chat etc – would love to see you all there :)

The Thrill Week Blog Hop September 1, 2011

Thrill Week is here! Mwahahahahahaaaa!!!

It’s finally here – Thrill Week – where myself and 6 other blogs will be celebrating all things crime fiction (one of my favourite genres). Pop on over to host Marce’s blog (Tea Time with Marce) to see her answers to the following questions and then have a peek at these lovely bloggers too – you’re bound to get some ideas and inspiration about which books you should be reading:

Best O’Books

Cafe of Dreams Book Reviews

Mental Foodie – A Book and Food Lover

So to kick off the week, here are my answers to the questionnaire:

1) What is your favourite genre out of Thriller, Mystery, Suspense and Horror? Why?

I think I would have to say mystery. I love a good whodunnit and especially love trying to work out the perpetrator as early on as I can (what I especially love is, despite being a seasoned crime fic reader, the author can still fool me).

2) Who are your top 3 authors in those genres?

Tess Gerritsen, Val McDermid, Mary Higgins Clark.

Both Gerritesen and McDermid I love because of their ability to pull me in from page one with promises of high body counts, red herrings and clever psychological and forensic detail. I like intelligent crime fiction and these two are among the best for me. Mary Higgins Clark, on the other hand, is my Queen of Comfort in the crime genre. Her books are pretty formulaic but that’s what I love as I know what I’m going to get and she has never failed to deliver. I think MHC is a fantastic author who gets overlooked a lot but, for me, if I ever need a comfort read then she is at the top of my pile (and despite her books being formulaic, I hardly ever guess whodunnit until the end).

I am really excited to have have interviewed Mary Higgins Clark last year and I also have interviews with both Tess Gerritsen and Val McDermid coming up shortly so keep an eye out for those :)

3)Tell us who your favourite male and female authors are in the genre?

Female: Tess Gerritsen, Val McDermid, Mary Higgins Clark, Agatha Christie, Elly Griffiths, S J Bolton, Karen Rose, Tana French, Lisa Gardner

Male: Linwood Barclay, Harlan Coben, Jo Nesbo, Steig Larsson, Peter Robinson, James Patterson, Robert Goddard

Interestingly enough, I was able to immediately write down all the names of my favourite female authors, but with the exception of the first two males I had to go off and check what books I had read (which was accompanied by many “oh yeah”‘s) Wonder why that is?

4) What book do you remember loving but don’t remember the details?

And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie. I read this when I was in my early teens and again in my twenties but I don’t remember a thing about it other than there are 10 people who are called to an island and one by one they are killed off and the reader has to try to work out who is doing it. I could read it again today and still have no idea until the end. In fact, I really must read it again – it’s a fantastic book and I highly recommend it!

5) What has been your favourite book this year so far:

ThrillerThe Surgeon by Tess Gerritsen

MysterySacrifice by S J Bolton

SuspenseBefore I Go To Sleep by S J Watson

HorrorCarrie by Stephen King

  6) What series or trilogy would you recommend ?

Rizzoli & IslesTess Gerritsen (Fantastic Detective / Forensic Pathologist duo who solve some really interesting and unusuak crimes between them. My favourites!)

Hill & JordanVal McDermid (Detective and Criminal Pyschologist who work together to solve serial killer cases and really get into the mind of the perpetrators. Brilliant series!)

Ruth & NelsonElly Griffiths (I love these two! Detective and Forensic Archaeologist who solve some old and new crimes when bones have been found. You gotta love Ruth & Nelson!)

The Millenium TrilogyStieg Larsson (Swedish Journalist, Blomkvist, gets involved in some high profile cases with the aid of his rather unique sidekick, Lisbeth Salander.)

Inspector Alan BanksPeter Robinson (Set in the Yorkshire Dales where it’s supposed to be rural and sleepy except bodies keep turning up, leaving Inspector Alan Banks to investigate. Great series.)

Gretchen LowellChelsea Cain (Not for the feint hearted. Gretchen Lowell is sick, sick, sick but you can’t help but read about her exploits).

  7) Recommend 1 or 2 books that you think more around the blogosphere should read

If you want a proper crime, serial killer type book then you should definitely read Retribution by Jilianne Hoffman. I loved this book – pacey, gripping, creepy. Just brilliant!

For something a little gentler then I would recommend Gentlemen and Players by Joanne Harris. It’s a great book and I never saw the twist coming at the end!

8 What authors have you tried and look forward to reading more from them?

Linda Castello – I have read her first book in a series of crime books set in the Amish community, Sworn to Silence,  and loved it so I am looking forward to reading the next two

Jane Casey – Has written 3 books and I have only read the second one, The Burning, which I loved.

Karen RoseI have only read her latest book, You Belong to Me, and I really enjoyed it and am very excited to know that I have 10 more of hers waiting to be read!

Stephen Beckett – Againm, I have only read the first one (The Chemistry of Death) out of the 4 books he has written so far with the same lead character so I have more to look forward to.

Jilianne Hoffman – Despite loving Retribution (see above) I still haven’t read the other book by the author but I do have it at home so I am looking forward to diving in to that one.

  9) What authors in the above genres are on your TBR list but you haven’t tried yet?  Who should I read soon?

I am always on the look out for new crime ficiton authors so I am open to suggestions.  Based on my likes, which authors or books do YOU think I should be reading?

Have you seen anything you like? Do you already any of the authors above or do you think you might give any of them a go? And don’t forget those recommendations :)

I will be doing another Thrill Week post on 6th September and I have the MOST AMAZING GIVEAWAY too! A total of  FIFTEEN BOOKS to giveaway so make sure you drop by!

Welcome to the second literary giveaway blog hop hosted by Judith at Leeswammes where there are a whole buncg of blogs giving away books! Hurrah! The last one was a great success with 28 blogs joining in the fun and this year there are even more (make sure you pop over to see who else is giving lovely books away). What better way to start the weekend than to have a little mosey at all those lovely books being given away and trying to win some (or all) of them! Good luck!

As I did last time I will again be offering a choice of 3 books. All three books are ones that I have absolutely adored (and all of them are in my top 10 favourite books):

Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden

“This is a seductive and evocative epic on an intimate scale, which tells the extraordinary story of a geisha girl. Summoning up more than twenty years of Japan’s most dramatic history, it uncovers a hidden world of eroticism and enchantment, exploitation and degradation. From a small fishing village in 1929, the tale moves to the glamorous and decadent heart of Kyoto in the 1930s, where a young peasant girl is sold as servant and apprentice to a renowned geisha house.”

This book completely and utterly spellboung me. It is beautiful, exquisite and you cannot fail to be moved by this book.

The Secret History by Donna Tartt

“A misfit at an exclusive New England college, Richard finds kindred spirits in the five eccentric students of his ancient Greek class. But his new friends have a horrific secret. When blackmail and violence threaten to blow their privileged lives apart, they drag Richard into the nightmare that engulfs them. And soon they enter a terrifying heart of darkness from which they may never return.”

This book is amazing; pure brilliance! Read it!

Blindness by Jose Saramago

“A driver waiting at the traffic lights goes blind. An opthamologist tries to diagnose his distinctive white blindness, but is affected before he can read the textbooks. It becomes a contagion, spreading throughout the city. Trying to stem the epidemic, the authorities herd the afflicted into a mental asylum where the wards are terrorised by blind thugs. And when fire destroys the asylum, the inmates burst forth and the last links with a supposedly civilised society are snapped. No food, no water, no government, no obligation, no order. This is not anarchy, this is blindness.”

Like nothing else I have ever read. This book is pure genius!

Rules:

Please choose ONE of these three books and tell me why you would like to read it. It’s that simple! :)

Good luck!

Win a World Book Night book! March 3, 2011

Filed under: Authors,Yann Martel — The Book Whisperer @ 8:51 pm
Tags: ,

Today I picked up my box of 48 copies of Yann Martel’s book Life of Pi from my local branch of Waterstones (who gave me a £5.00 off my next purchase voucher! Woop wooooop!!). They are now all sitting on my kitchen worktop waiting to be wrapped and dropped through ususpecting letterboxes in Wakefield on Saturday night.

To celebrate the first ever World Book Night event, I am also offering TWO copies of this brilliant book here. I will be offering this to UK residents only (really sorry – normally my giveaways are international, but a) I have done a few of those recently and I have to watch the pennies and b) this is a UK initiative and it would be nice for someone close to home to win a copy. Really sorry to exclude non UK residents and I promise that my next giveaway will include you all :)

 Why I love this book

I first read this book when I was was on holiday in 2004 and going from China to Malaysia. I knew I would be on a boat in the Malacca Straits at some point and thought I would amuse myself by taking a book about a shipwreck in that exact stretch of water (I have a bizarre sense of humour!)

What I had hoped would be an enjoyable read turned out to be one of the loves of my life in book terms. Rarely does a book come along that is such a treat that you still think about it years after reading it. This is one of those books.

Pi Patel is a young boy who is brought up in a zoo in India with his parents and brother. After the family decided to emigrate they board a ferry (along withan asortment of their many furry / stripy/ four-legged/ long-necked friends where disaster awaits them and Pi finds himself in a lifeboat with only a zebra, oragutang, hyena and sea-sick tiger named Richard Parker for company.

This book made me laugh, cry and totally fall head over heels in love with a Begal Tiger! I really lived through that whole journey with Pi Patel and companions. I wept over the Zebra and Orange Juice the Orang-Utan and howled with laughter at the thought of this huge, stripey hunk of fur that went by the name of Richard Parker swatting flying fish with his paws on a lifeboat in the middle of the ocean.

This book really is a gem and an unforgettable one at that. Infact, I was so taken by surprise by my love for Life of Pi that I was quite unprepared for feeling so low when I had finnished it. It was a whole 3 days before I could even pick anything up without shoving it back in my suitcase in disgust again.

Beautifully written, wonderfully engaging and a real joy to live through. It will be a long time before I will love a character like Richard Parker again. And to prove my point, Richard Parker is still my favourite literary character hence these stripey things that have made their way into my life ever since!

Have I made you want to read it?

If you would like to win a copy please just comment below (with your email address) and I will randomly pick someone after the competition closes at midight on Sunday 6th March. Winners will be announced on Monday when I will post about how Saturday night went :)

Want to double your chances?

Louise, who is a reader of this blog but doesn’t have her own, is also giving away copies of Life of Pi for World Book Night and she, too, has two copies of the book to send to 2 lucky winners (again UK residents only please). Please email Louise at  bunny_hops [at] hotmail [dot] co.uk and she will pick the winners out of a hat!

Good luck!

 The Literary Giveaway Blog Hop

Welcome to the first literary giveaway blog hop hosted by Judith at Leeswammes where there are a total of 28 blogs giving away books! Hurrah! What better way to start the weekend than to have a little mosey at all those lovely books being given away and trying to win some (or all) of them!

I am going  to offer ONE of the following books to giveaway and the choice is yours! I have chosen three books that I absolutely LOVE and are woefully neglected in my opinion.

# ONE

East Lynne by Ellen Wood – read my review here

First paragraph of my review:

“Eat your heart out Wilkie Collins. What a fantastic book this is! I just loved every minute of it (and there were a LOT of minutes – for some reason it took me an age to read). For about three weeks I felt like I was living in the middle of a Victorian soap-opera. There was murder, betrayal, divorce, disguises and death and all this set among a backdrop of stately homes and horse-and-carriages. What’s not to love?”

# TWO

Villette by Charlotte Bronte – you can reaad my full review here

First paragraph of my review:

“Reader, I heart Ms. Bronte! Reading Villette was like reading a huge epic that I was so emmersed in that I walked in Lucy Snowe’s shoes, I felt what she felt. How many authors can do that to you?”

# THREE

Wolf Totem by Jiang Rong – you can read my full review here

First paragraph of my review:

“From the very first page I was hooked. Jiang Rong creates such a vivid and compelling narrative that I found myself similtaniously gripped with the story yet trying to slow down and savour every word, so beautiful was each sentence.”

  WHICH ONE WILL YOU PICK?

All you need to do is comment below telling me which book you would like – simple as that! All bloggers and non-bloggers from around the world are welcome and no need to do anything silly for extra entries.

The competition closes on 23rd February and I will pick the winner at random the day after and post the result on my blog.

  Good luck everyone!

And the winner is….. May 16, 2010

Thank you to everyone who entered my competition. I had great fun reading which books everyone would buy (and added a few more to my Mt. TBR in the process :) ). The contest is now closed and I added all the entries to a spreadsheet and then chose the winner by using random.org. The winner will recieve books of their choice from The Book Depository up to the value of £20.00 (or equivalent).

And the winner is….

Shannon

Well done Shannon! I have converted the amount into Canadian dollars for you and you now have Candian $30.00 to spend on lovely books from The Book Depository.

Shannon is one of my favourite reviewers on Goodreads and also has her own blog (which she has recently revamped and which is looking fab!) here at Giraffe Days which I hope you’ll check out – she is a reading machine!

Which books would you like? You decide! May 5, 2010

Thank you!

I want to start with a Thank you! This is for all of you reading this blog right now – thank you for sharing my book passion /aholism / madness with me since I started this blog. I started this blog back in mid December as a way to log my thoughts about books I love and connect with like-minded people and although it can be hard work, it’s ultimately worth it.

I’ve made it to 10,000

When I first started blogging I had no idea where it would take me really. I didn’t even know that there was such a huge book blog community out there already and I am still constantly amazed by some of the fantastic blogs I keep coming across on a weekly basis (some of my favourites are listed in my blogroll if you want to check them out). So, I am delighted that from a standing start of nowhere, in just over 4 months have received over 10,000 hits on my blog. I never expected that in a million years and I am so happy that you have all popped on my my little blog for some book chat – that makes me smile :)

So, as a token of my appreciation…

…I have decided to have a little giveaway to celebrate. The prize is £20.00 to spend on the book(s) of your choicen (that’s $30 US or 23 Euros just to give you the idea).  Just think what you could get for that! This competition is open internationally and you don’t have to be a blogger to enter. The prize will either be an Amazon voucher of £20.00 (for UK peeps only) and the rest of the world can choose as many books as you like up to that value from The Book Depository and I will order and send to you.

The Rules!

Please read this part carefully as non-compliant entries will not be counted.

1) Please comment below and tell me which books (if you win) you would order and why. (You won’t be held to this – I just  love to know what other people like to read so be sure to tell me all about those lovely, shiny new books you are drooling over!)

2) Please put a valid email address along with your entry so that I can contact you if you win.

3) You do NOT need to do any of those really annoying things to get extra entries. It is one entry per person. If you want to tweet or post a link to this competition and share the love then that’s great (and thank you!) but it’s not necessary (I know – it annoys me as much as you!)

4) The closing date for entries is Sunday 16th May at 6pm GMT.

Good luck and get sharing those bookish must-have’s!
